When you are throwing a party, it is advisable to plan it. Many of us don’t enjoy planning when it comes to parties, mainly because we think it’s going to spoil the spontaneity. But if you wish to appeal to every last need of your visitors, basically it will be important. Party packs play an important role during any kind of party. What makes party packs so fantastic? Stunning tinsel, crazy hats, colourful wigs or exciting poppers – every one of these products combine to create the ideal atmosphere. Whenever anyone arrives at your home, they want to know they are at a gathering. Why not place an incredible party banner above the front door so they really know they are at the right house? They will adore it. Party packs are simply a single essential factor for this sort of event.

It’s also advisable to think about plenty of fantastic music to fill up your home with. Think about soothing jazz, loud rock or some unforgettable dance music. Which kind of folks are attending? Think about if the visitors are sad and need cheering up, or if they’re older and want slower, traditional tunes. Having the ideal tunes will help to make your party unforgettable. Games will also be an incredibly good option to go along with any party packs. Once again, think about who is arriving at the celebration and choose suitable games. Huge games or small games, dynamic games or easygoing board games – decide on the right one for the guests.

Games are a fun way to help people communicate, becoming good friends in no time at all. At the end of the party everyone will undoubtedly be in a great mood, and will often recommend your events to all their friends. Organising a great celebration is a dependable way to find new friends. You might also get invited to their parties also!

I’ve recently been reading a cracking book about the psychology of items that we use every day. The book is called the Design of Everyday things by Don Norman and it should be a compulsory read for all product designers. In it he explains why we find so many products infuriating and difficult to use and shows us how the sales process often means that usability is low on the list of most product design. He discusses how we respond to items around us and ultimately how things can be designed better. It is fascinating to read a psychologists explanation of things that we go through every day.

For example, Norman explains why we get so frustrated when we can’t work certain machines. He hypothesises that in general if something is difficult to use or if we can’t find the right button to make it work we tend to blame ourselves. We are ashamed that we can’t program the video recorder and feel like it is our deficiencies that prevent it from working. Norman argues that this should not be the case. Bad design is to blame for things that are difficult to use and that this should be addressed in the design process. We should not have to read a bland instruction manual to work out how to use a product. We should be offered intuitive buttons that make it easy for us.

Norman also discusses the concept that we have a relationship with different materials and that we naturally treat them differently. In essence we recognise that different materials do different things and we sub-consciously approach them with this in mind. For example glass has a few roles: it can be looked through and it can also be broken. Wood can be manipulated and joined to make things or the porous surface can be written on. These are the things that each item affords. He gives the example that the council had placed a glass wall on a bus shelter but vandals proceeded to smash it. The council replaced the glass screen with hardboard. This was the same thickness as the glass and could easily have been smashed but instead the vandals drew graffiti on the wood. This demonstrates that we react to different materials differently.

I would definitely recommend the book to designers and to people that want to understand more about the psychology of everyday things.

Lomana Tresor Lua Lua, so good they named him four times, is a cult footballer that is famous for his exciting attacking style of play. A true fans favourite he has graced the team sheet of some of the world’s most illustrious clubs including Olympiakos, Newcastle United and the undeniable pinnacle of any footballers career – Colchester United. Indeed it was at Colchester United where he made his footballing debut. He came on as a sub when Colchester were losing 3-0 and in 30 minutes of pure genius he took the game by the scruff of the neck and reversed the fortunes of the team helping them dominate the final few minutes of the game where he clawed back two goals. He made such an impression that fans of both teams applauded him of the field. It was no wonder that the baby names list soon included the name Lomana Lua Lua in the small town of Colchester.

He graduated to join Newcastle United in the Premier League where his famous backflip goalscoring celebration was seen 9 times in 88 games. His exciting style of play endeared him to the Geordie faithful and the North East saw a rise in the number of children named Lomana. His record for his country is impeccable as he has scored a whopping 18 goals in 33 games for the Democratic Republic of Congo. Now playing with Olympiakos in Greece we can expect to see an increase in the number of Greek babies called Lomana in the near future.

I have always wanted a holiday home. Somewhere that I could go away and relax from time to time. Of course there are costs involved for example maintenance, holiday home insurance and utilities but it would be lovely to escape to a place in an exotic locality but also feel at home. So where would this holiday home be? How do you choose? Would you go for an inaccessible island location in the Bahamas or South East Asia or would you opt for a place in Europe that is easy to get to? Here are my top 3 tips for places to have a holiday home:

1) Sardinia – this is my pick for a cheap holiday home. It benefits from being a short flight from the UK on a cheap airline and at the same time you get a taste of Italy, lots of beaches and isolation.

2) Ljubljana, Slovenia – A real gem of a town right in the middle of Europe. Close to skiing resorts, the beautiful lake bled it is a perfect weekend getaway.

3) Thailand – some of the most beautiful beaches and cheap flights to get there. Thailand can be visited any time of the year and you will never get bored of the place.

Thank god for the internet. It is now easier than ever to search and compare the cost of items online. In the past I used to be a lazy consumer and I would generally take whatever the first product was that I was offered. Savvy salesmen and marketeers had a field day with me by selling me the highest priced item that they had. But now I use online comparison tools and it is true that they actually do help save me money. In fact it has become a bit of an obsession. In the past I would just check the prices of other items that I would buy online like holidays or insurance but more recently I have even searched for cheap prices on tools, spare parts and even car tyres! I only wish I had made a note of the money I had saved it would help me justify spending more money on a holiday!

I wonder what the impact of this new found consumer power will be. Businesses will probably have to become more efficient so that they can charge higher prices. Will this mean that the quality of the products and services will get worser? Or will it simply remove those businesses that are not run efficiently? Will this mean that only the best and largest businesses will survive? Who knows!

Parties are brilliant. There is nothing more fun than donning a silly hat, letting off some streamers and having a good old knees up. Regardless of your age it is always fun. The best thing is that even Grandmas and Grandchildren can muck in on a party and have fun. Old fashioned party games are the best for it. I look for any excuse to have an old fashioned party and even try and sell it as a retro night. Any excuse to get the party products out! I guess the closest we get to perfection are the occasional summer jubilee style street parties and I for one think we should all get involved.

So what are the best party games for your party? My favourite is the old classic in which you have a large slab of chocolate and a knife and fork as well as a hat, scarf and gloves. The players take it in turns to roll dice. When one player rolls a double six he or she must try and put on all of the aforementioned clothes and cut off a square of chocolate. The winner gets to eat the most amount of chocolate but if someone else rolls a double six your go is over – so you have to be quick!

Buying blinds is not always an easy proposition. You may be tempted to just buy cheap blinds but it helps to know exactly what you are looking. There is an enormous range of blinds and thousands of different types picking the right one for the right room can be tricky. Blinds tend to be suitable for different rooms and for the novice blind buyer it can be difficult to know exactly which blinds are suitable. You may be familiar with the names of blinds but knowing the exact difference can be confusing.

Blinds tend to be categorised as one of the following; Venetian blinds, Roman blinds, Pleated blinds, Wooden blinds, Roller blinds, Woodweave blinds and vertical blinds. Venetian blinds are the most recognisable blinds and have been a defining feature of old film noir films. You will have seen them in scenes where the detective stand in his office contemplating the crime he is investigating and his face is sliced with thin dark and bright slices of chiaroscuro light. His eyes look sharper in the bright light and the camera cuts to his face which is half dark, half light which in turn leads the viewer to contemplate the duality of the detective.

The NHS is brilliant and my experience of it has been consistently fantastic. I have lived in other countries and the brilliance of the NHS is even more apparent when you come back to the UK. Whilst I often hear people moan about not getting in to see their GP or not being given antibiotics when they have a cold it has to be said that if you are dangerously ill they will work hard to fix you. That being said having private health insurance is still important. It is particularly good for sporting injuries and for if you are unfortunate enough to need an extended period in hospital.

The private health service is generally better at dealing with sporting injuries and other injuries. Generally access to physiotherapists through the NHS takes a bit of time. Private health can have you in to see a physio within a day and many private practitioners can also offer the benefit of visiting you somewhere convenient to you. So you could have your sore back looked at from the comfort of your own home or even at your place of work. Also, the private sector can help you see the best consultants quicker than through the NHS. Many consultants split their hours between private and NHS work and generally the private waiting lists are much shorter.

I’ve always loved the thought of having a job where you can design products. I’ve often thought that being creative and at the same time creating something tangible would be extremely rewarding. It’s kind of like tinkering in the garage but doing it as a job. I guess the hardest part is having the eureka moment where you come up with the product concept. I guess after that trying to make the vision come to life and working on the product design would be very exciting. I think that seeing your idea grow into something that actually works would be great.

One of the most high profile product designers is James Dyson. The Dyson vacuum cleaner is very efficient. Dyson managed to harness the power of centrifugal force to create the first mainstream bagless cleaner. Recently he has added a fast hand dryer to his portfolio of products. Such is his success that he is reported to have a £1 billion fortune.

Energy Producing Car

One of my first creations would be a car that produces energy. There must be a way to make more of the energy that a car uses to move forward. Surely the wheels could be attached to some kind of generator and turned into power. It must be possible!

Much to my girlfriends frustration I struggle to understand the benefits of good curtains. In fact I struggle to understand which curtains are better than others and when faced with an aisle of choice I fail miserably. I’m not really sure how but I manage to consistently pick the fabric type or design that causes the missus to wrinkle her nose. If I was as consistent with the pools picks then I would be a millionaire. I have decided to go away and learn a little more about how to pick curtains.

Colours

It really depends on the room that you are putting the curtains in but generally it is wise to avoid anything that is too bright or vivid. Conversely if you choose a pale colour such as white or cream then make sure you are buying a thick curtain. Whilst these will be more expensive they will be more likely to keep the room dark in bright sunlight. Thinner curtains tend to look see through and should be avoided in the bedroom. It is also worth choosing curtain colours that do not get too dirty too easily. Remember – you generally don’t wash them regularly.

Fabrics

This is one area that I find particularly confusing. Generally the fabric should be thick, soft and also very durable. My girlfriend seems to pick curtains in the same way as picking a dress so the fact that it is soft is important. You should also try and pick a fabric that would complement others in the room. For example if the curtains are going in the front room then you should make sure that they compliment the fabric on your sofa.
