Oh for simpler times – Team Building

Once upon a time, a long time ago, when ogres lived under bridges, when no one had heard of swine flu, when dyslexic people were just thick and when a power cut didn’t mean that the family would go hungry people were happier. They were harder working and they got on with their neighbours. The question is are we now so socially retarded that we’ve forgotten how to work together as  a team? Well unfortunately it appears that we have. Out is the community camaraderie: In is selfish apathy.

In fact we are so rubbish at rolling up our sleeves some savvy Team Building folks have come up with a way of making money out of it by inventing games and exercise that address this issue. Cynics out there might refer to team building as the worst of all modern intrusions. But surely being encouraged to be nice to one another and work together is a good thing? My only gripe is that these sessions always appear so insipid. Why go for a day working in a soup kitchen or out in a field on a treasure hunt when you could go and do something really testing.

I suggest that archery could be make a little more tasty if the boss were to stand with an apple on his head at which you could shoot (the apple that is!). Perhaps paint-ball could be replaced with air guns – you’d work a lot harder together if the bullet was really going to hurt. Or if you’re having a treasure hunt do it Battle Royale style. Would certainly keep you focussed! That would certainly encourage people to get on with one another!
